Can we trigger a sort of the Games section?

I seem to notice that the rankings in the “Games” section of “Streaming Channels” (Channel Store on the player) have not been updated for… well, at least for 3 weeks now.

Mid-last year RokuJoel said something to the extent that due to algorithm malfunction^, the ordering of the games category (on Roku players) is being done manu-matically. Over the last 21 days (at least. that’s how long i have been checking it) there has been no change in the sort order, so i am inclined to conclude that nobody has run the popularity report and updated the rankings since before Christmas.

@Roku* - can we shake this tree and see that “Games” gets resorted by recent data? Preferably accounting all three or whatever number of weeks were missed.

(^) one can only presume that “there was an accident with a time-machine and a prophylactic.” :mrgreen:

Hello?
Today turns 4 weeks since Games category has not been re-ordered…

5 weeks!
Respectfully, WTF?

I honestly would pay Roku a nonzero sum of money to respond to things.

Nowadays lots of things in RokuCo seem delegated to Janice in Accounting

6 weeks…

7 weeks.
O Janice, Where Art Thou?

You have triggered a resort. We are switching it back to Algorithmic. Note that games that have integrated video or play audio streams will sort higher, so those of you who have integrated RAF into your games will likely sort higher. So, add RAF to your games! RAF enabled games are actually earning substantial amounts of money.

Well… that doesn’t seem like an improvement at all.
It would be like saying using a triangular wheel in a bicycle is an improvement over the square wheel because it eliminates one bump per rotation.

First thing to notice is that the sort order is unstable - i.e. re-loading the category changes the exact order. Compare these three shots (Roku3):

[upload|/g8FWqUtpum/41ILXJyXbg==]

[upload|rouCzEqxO01YRQTIlNgTSA==]

It’s not that the order has naturally changed because s/o downloaded one of the channels - as timestamp shows, those are taken within couple of minutes from each other. And it does not seem like out-of-sync back-end servers returning different things, since there are more than two orderings.

And second - ad-infected games aside, there is no rhyme nor reason to the way games are ordered. Yes, i am scrutinizing the list because my apps (free and paid, new and “old”) somehow reliably end up at the end both - but the order should make some sense, right?!

  • We already know it is not by average rating - but to verify, cue “PartyTrivia” from the middle of the list has a 2.5-star rating (about the worst one can see on Roku), while “Hangman” at the end pulls a solid 4

  • Maybe it’s by total number of installs? No, because “Backgammon” with <1,000 installs is ahead of “Snake” and “Retaliate” which have >100,000 installs each

  • Maybe it’s by velocity, aka “how many are being installed lately”. No, because “Agario” gets ~10-20x more installs per week than “Backgammon”

  • Maybe paid vs free are unjustly weighed? No, because paid “Anna Montana” is ahead of the free “Anna Montana Demo” but the paid “Mazes Plus” is behind the free “Mazes”

To be sure, RokuCo does not have to disclose the exact ordering algorithm - it may be considered trade secret to avoid publishers strategically “gaming” it. Apple, Google, Amazon don’t publsh their algorithms - but in addition theirs actually work - they don’t produce bizarre ordering of the apps. And Roku’s sample sizes are not that small to cause instability of statistics - something else is amiss?

If we pull back a little to the big picture - what is the purpose of maintaining “top charts” in general? The benefit is 3-fold: (a) for end-users, it lets them find the best content in some 3000-odd channels in the case of Roku; thus (b) for the platform owner (RokuCo), it improves engagement and goodwill to the platform, plus profit-sharing; and (c) for the app developer, when ordering is properly done, it aligns their interests with those of the platform owner, e.g. if charts are ordered by user ratings, that incentivize me to strive writing high-quality beloved app; if it were ordered by top grossing, that’s extra incentive to squeeze more $$; if it were by number of installs, that’s incentive to run viral marketing and so on. But as the ordering in Games is now, from all i see it’s “none of the above” and fails to benefit viewers, Co and developers

There was an offhand mention in an article I read recently that Roku sorts the channel sections by the number of hours of content streamed on the channel - can’t seem to find it now.

This would explain some of the difficulty with sorting the games and apps sections - since streaming video isn’t really what they do. I wonder if someone at Roku implemented a random sorting for tie breaking (channels that play no streams), to prevent channels from becoming popular simply because of publish date or title chosen.

I’ll +1 this.

The list seems fairly wacky right now, and it definitely doesn’t have RAF games towards the top.

Also on the Roku 3 it seems to be that it’s putting all of the non-BrightScript (NDK or Marmalade) games towards the top.

Oh hello! - nice to see you around. Your guess of non-BrightScript games benefitting would be incorrect - see the screenshot above, out of 7 games at the end, 5 are non-B/S (the other 2 i don’t know). If any trend, i rather seem to notice the old games seem to top the chart - but then “Chess” and “Backgammon” (which are new) are listed high without being crazy popular.

It makes sense to measure user engagement to determine popularity - like say number of times app was started or total time spent using it. Heck, Amazon Underground actually pays game developers for the time users spend in their game! - the more time spend, more $. No ads involved :shock:. Measuring video play was probably a shortcut, an easy hack to exclude time spent in screensaver or channel abandoned for days in list-of-videos menu, doing nothing. But such metric makes no sense for non-streaming apps, none whatsoever.

Re the random sorting, Hanlon’s razor likely applies - i.e. no malevolent or benevolent intent but rather their sort routine is unstable (e.g. quicksort/shellsort are unstable). But that’s trivial to fix by enhancing the key, taking into account say user rating (some additional variable). The instability of the chart is a bit of “canary in the coal mine” - while not a big deal by itself it indicates bigger problems behind.

Yeah, I’ve been chasing down the rabbit-hole into wonderland for the last few months. Almost got my game done now though. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I’m having a tough time figuring out why my “Chess Live” program is no longer functioning. I’ve been unable to get any support from Roku. Anyway the program comes up on my screen but there’s no menu . I’ve tried the uninstall/install of the program but to no avail. Do you have any knowledge of this issue or what I might do to remedy the problem ? Thanks, Ron Leonard
