Ever since updating my box to 4.9 (I’m currently at 5.0 build 8043), I’ve been having difficulty packaging up apps. Sometimes it works, but now it just isn’t. I can telnet to my Roku’s IP address at port 8080, but hitting enter or entering a command (genkey) causes an immediate “Connection closed by foreign host” message and I’m booted. Any advice is greatly appreciated. I’ve tried to restart my machine, Roku, etc. I’d prefer to not have to reset my device to factory, but will if I have to. I’ve had this issue since 12/12
Have you gone through the process to re-enable developer mode? The update to 5.0 may have disabled it to ensure you accept the new TOS.
I’m afraid that didn’t help either.
Try full factory resetting the device, hold the button on the back under the power jack in for 30 seconds.

I did a factory reset both by pressing the button under the power jack and via the SDK. Neither were successful.
Did you re-enable developer mode after the factory reset?
If you access your device’s IP address in a web browser, do you see the Dev Installer page?
–Mark
Yep, I did re-enable them. I can visit the page via IP in my browser and can telnet:
telnet $ROKU_DEV_TARGET 8080
Trying 192.168.1.91...
Connected to np-13c1cj109560.
Escape character is '^]'.
genkey
Connection closed by foreign host.
as an example…
what client are you using to telnet?
I’m just using the Terminal on my Mac.
Super weird. Do you have another roku you can test on, just in case it is your network?
By the way, just to be certain, pressing the reset button for a short period of time is a soft reset, holding it down for what seems like forever is a full hard reset.
Otherwise, I would suggest taking it back and exchanging for another device.
- Joel
I will grab my other and test it out. I did hold it for 30 seconds, but it restarted after 10. Not sure if the hard reset “took” as it was restarting… Would Roku exchange the device for me? I bought it forever ago!!
If you are holding it in properly, it will try to restart a few times, but it won’t finish restarting. Try 30 seconds to 1 minute of actual time with the button pressed.
If that doesn’t work, contact support and then send me a private message with your case #.
- Joel
Thanks, Joel. No luck so I sent you a PM
OK - update. I went and got my other Roku box and am getting the same result. I’ve tried switching to the wireless network as well as the wired… What else could be going on here? Joel, ignore that PM, I misread your last message and didn’t contact support first…
Hi all -
This is still unresolved. Can someone point me to a reason why this might be happening? If it is a network settings issue, any thoughts?
Thanks!
Julie
It certainly sounds like some kind of networking issue. What brand / model of router are you using?
- Joel
I am using the same network as I was prior to the issue happening, but am using a Time Capsule to broadcast a wireless network (in bridge mode) behind an AT&T modem/router. The Roku box has been tested with a cable and over the wireless network…
Thanks!
Sounds like a pretty sketchy setup to me. If you can put your time capsule in AP mode then try it, otherwise, get a router that is designed to be a router first and foremost.
edit: Also, I have AT&T UVerse DSL at home, and regular AT& DSL before that, never have any serious issues using wireless or wired with my Roku on those.
