I need to demonstrate a proof of concept channel later this week.
The server is a LAMP stack running as a virtual machine on my MacBook Pro.
The problem is that the Roku won’t finish network set up.
It gives me a green light for the Ethernet cable and the local network and then generates this error:
“can’t connect to the Internet Confirm that your Internet connection is working…”
At this point the the only option is to “try again” which just takes you back to the wired/wireless selection page.
I know that it can’t connect to the Internet (capital I).
I don’t need it for the demo. Everything it needs will be on the LAN.
It’s highly unlikely that I will have live Internet access for the demo.
There are several things you need to make sure of. If you are direct connecting to your laptop from the Roku, you need to configure Internet Connection Sharing, or at the very least set a manual IP address on the Roku that is in the same subnet as the macbooks network address, so:
if the macbook is at 192.168.5.30
the roku needs to be at 192.168.5.xxx where xxx is any number other than the macbook’s address and greater than 0 and less than 255, I would suggest you pick a number like 50.
Best if you turn on internet connection sharing (in the sharing section of System Preferences) so that it automatically gets and address and you won’t have to deal with manually addressing at all.
Check my other message, turns out you can’t set it statically. On a router you can usually set it to dynamically generate the same IP address for a devices Hardware Address (called a MAC address - Media Access Control address)
