Free Roku Game "Nohzdyve"

I recreated the game “Nohzdyve” from “Bandersnatch” that is on Netflix. This is pure Brightscript using roScreen.

What did you think of “Bandersnatch”?

Well it works okay up until you die, then (at least for me) it just freezes and does nothing, no matter what button I press. I have to exit via Home then start over.

(By the way, I love the cool “tetris” piece screensaver)

Hey Komag,

Thanks for playing. You are right there is a delay between rounds. I think I put in a button lockout to prevent the game restarting too quickly and it will continue to play if you wait just a little bit. I probably made the delay a little too long and I will fix it the next time I have a chance to work on this. The screensaver object makes more sense if you watched bandersnatch on netflix.

That is cool :slightly_smiling_face: I will check it out tonight!

PS. Welcome to the retro-game-roku dev team

Thanks for the welcome but I have been here for quite a while. I am not that great at publicity and marketing. Any suggestions on where to promote Roku games?

My published games https://my.roku.com/add/CQGXN
and this demo from 2014 I never finished porting (Playable but there are issues.)

Oh cool, didn’t realize it was you!

Me neither! I was looking at your Run CMD just recently and realized you used a particular “stock” image I’m using on an unreleased game I’m working on :slightly_smiling_face:
But I welcomed you as a reference for the fact your did a remake of an existing " retro-game" just like I did with Prince of Persia, Lode Runner, Donkey Kong and Moon Patrol.
BTW I really hope Roku team don’t deprecate and actually improve the Draw2D framework, when all supported devices become OpenGL machines, we could develop so much better games with more resources.

I stumbled across this youtube video showing some of the artwork from RUN CMD:

Very interesting to see this, made me think “it’s a small world!”. Nice choice in tilesets, very cool looking stuff.

…And I finally got around to trying those old demos
Star Trek - looks like it would have awesome back in 1976 when it was programmed, before my time
Time Quest - Very cool, very nostalgic to me since I was a kid playing King’s Quest, Space Quest, etc

Thanks Komag,

The artwork for “RUN-CMD” is from Luis Zuno who has made some of his art assets freely available. I also support him via patreon with revenue from “RUN-CMD”

I just published a new game https://www.locomalito.com/abbaye_des_morts.php which has a permissible license to port and I have the permission from the original author.(AKA how to do a port correctly) The main complaint I have received is that the controls are too difficult. The game itself is a difficult game and for a game like this with the roku controls being that only on button can be pressed at a time do make it more difficult, it just takes a little getting used to. having played the game so much during development I think the controls are fine, It is possible to complete every screen. It just takes patience and skill. Something which I think is lost on game players to day. People like easy wins and instant gratification. I remember the first time I played supper mario Bros, NES. I was terrible at at playing it with practice I got better at it.

I do wish I had more time to make games and put together a full point and click adventure game.

Ah, that’s very cool, kinda reminds me of Montezuma’s Revenge. It’s almost more of a puzzle game than an action platformer.

I wish to play this game at coming weekend, hopefully will enjoy it.
