Are there any tips to prevent this from happening? ie - is it better to exit the channel rather than leave the same channel running for weeks at a time? Is it better to power cycle the roku box once a week or so?

Use wired instead of wireless

Get a faster internet connection

watch off peak hours (not needed with FTTH)

Drop ISPs that share bandwidth (most cable co.) and get an ISP with dedicated customer bandwidth (most FTTH providers)
