Well, I was changing over one of my subscription channels to DP. But I found out there is no option for that yet in DP. I guess I missed the memo lol So, I have to somehow learn ScreenGraph. Sure hope ROKU adds the option for the subscription channels to DP. I know I would so appreciate it ROKU if you would do this really soon!
But until then, I have to find an example and take on another learning curve to somehow change over my subscription channels. Anyone know of an example using ScreenGraph? If not, I’ll have to search the other form and see what i can find out.
Hope no one else has several subscription channels to change over like I do…ugh
I haven’t seen any sort of good “free” example for subscriptions, but better to ask in the SDK forum. The first time I built a subscription channel it took around 6 months to learn BS and to build a backend system to manage all the content.
As for subscriptions in DP, it’s coming. Last target I read was Q3/Q4 2017, so I’m guessing it has been delayed as there has been no more information.
I have several subscription channels currently. I’m using DP for my free channels and then will work on redoing all art for the subscription channels that need to be changed over. If they implement the subscription option in DP that would save me a ton of work! Hope they do it soon.
Well, still no news on this topic. I wonder if they will even make the subscription option available for DP. Anyone heard anything new about this topic???
I have been reading a little about scenegraph. A whole new learning curve…again. Hopefully I can find some help with it in the forum. It looks more complicated than the old sdk. There are a few samples online but I think many still have missing parts. I have been able to change over several of my channels with DP since they are free channels. I have not figured out how to use DP to play one audio stream for my radio station. I think the last time I looked into it others were also trying to figure out how to do it as well.
Back to the hours of learning scenegraph it seems. Too bad Roku has not made the subscription option available or provided updates I have several channels to change over to scenegraph.
The long wait for an SVOD option is getting ridiculous. Is Roku EVER going to provide one? Or are they insisting everyone must put their eggs into a singular ad based basket?
^^ It can be done, just using the SDK model. DP is a simple, cookie cutter creator, kinda like Wordpress of web development. If you need something more or specific, you’ll need it custom coded.
As for ‘the long wait’, I wouldn’t hold my breath. If you need it asap, you’ll need it built or hire someone to build it.
For those who want a subscription feature, please get in touch. I’m working on an RDP-compatible SDK-based solution which could add these features. I’d love to gather common use cases since SVOD can be implemented in a number of different ways.
I have subscription channels but they are built on the old sdk. I’m currently trying to learn scenegraph so I don;t loose my channels 2019. I sure would love to know how to complete my rebuilds in scenegraph if there is any info to be shared. I’ll be spending my time in the sdk forum and researching this new build.

Just curious how did you have the current channel built, was that using brightscript? I found that pretty complicated when I gave it a shot about 4-5 years ago, plus the tutorials for that always seemed outdated so any step-by-step instructions became a maze after 2-3 steps.

Basically, it was a miracle. Wasn’t easy. I’m not a coding person at all and read all I could and was able to get some help in the forum from a few that were really good to share information and another friend that gave me tips as I went along.
For scenegraph, I have not started it yet, but I did find some information that looks very promising that I am going to try. If I can get anything working, I’ll share what I find out.
j/k, I hear you on that. Like I said I feel I gave Brightscript a valiant effort & just dropped it in the midst of it. I’m not a coder either. I think I was picking it up again &/or going to give the newer Scenegraph a chance when I noticed this DP being promoted on the site.
Wish you well, again I wouldn’t expect PPV to come ‘soon’, but myb overall the goal is to have a more template based system for channels to give Roku more control back.

Love the video lol
Here’s the official response I received from Roku:
Unfortunately, there are no plans at the moment to enable SVOD for Direct Publisher. If you are looking to add SVOD, your best bet is to create a SDK channel. Please see our list of Roku Development Partners[/url:2rsw6kqd], if you are interested.
Thank you for your understanding!

So there you have it - there will be no SVOD for Direct Publisher.

Thank you for sharing the information you received. I had a feeling it would be that way and started working on sdk. I have old sdk1 channels and having to learn the scenegraph..well trying to learn is a better statement
