Can't run genkey on model 3840BR with OS 15.3

Hi all,

I’m trying to generate a signing key with genkey, but the port 8080 console never responds on my device.

Device: Roku Streaming Stick 2025, model 3840BR (Brazil), Roku OS 15.3
Developer mode: enabled, sideloading and debugging work fine (installer page on port 80, ECP on 8060, VS Code debugger on 8081)

What happens: the TCP connection to port 8080 opens (Test-NetConnection succeeds), but nothing ever comes back: no prompt, no response to Enter or to genkey, even after waiting several minutes. The Packager page shows no dev key.

What I’ve tried:

  • Clients: PuTTY (Telnet and Raw), Windows telnet, a PowerShell TCP client, a Node.js TCP client, and Termius on an iPhone (so not a PC/firewall issue)
  • Disabling and re-enabling developer mode
  • System restart
  • Factory reset, then enabling developer mode and connecting to 8080 right away

Is genkey on port 8080 still supported on this model / Roku OS 15.x? Is there another way to generate a signing key on these devices? Has anyone generated a key successfully on a 3840BR or on OS 15.x?

I don’t have another Roku device, and in Brazil only a few models are sold, so any hint is appreciated.

Thanks!

This should be working, as long as the device is in developer mode. Are you trying to genkey while you have the VS Code IDE open? The debug port only supports a single connection at a time and will act like that if some other program is already connected, so try shutting down anything that might connect, reboot the device to be sure it’s all cleared, then do another telnet connection.

Hi, RokuBen

Thanks for your reply.

As a matter of fact, I managed to run genkey on port 8080. After many unsuccessfull tries, and also trying many other ways found on the Internet, all of suddenly port 8080 prompted and genkey worked as expected.

So, whatever was blocking it is gone.

Once again, thanks for your reply.
